Here's why Thursday's post-GDP sell-off may be overdone
  + stars: | 2024-04-25 | by ( Sarah Min | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +4 min
Stocks sold off Thursday aHoweverfter the latest economic data came in weaker than expected, but some observers say that the reaction was overdone. While the headline GDP number missed expectations, it nevertheless showed economic growth the Fed could take in stride, they say. He noted that the core parts of GDP, such as consumption growth and residential growth, were "quite good." "Stagflation is a combination of stagnant growth and high inflation," Nick continued. "I think the earnings backdrop has been very supportive," Lee told CNBC's " Closing Bell " on Thursday.

Nvidia Eddie George picked chipmaker darling Nvidia for its long-term prospects. Oracle shares are up roughly 9% this year. Apple George selected Apple for his second pick. Faced with waning demand and rising competitive pressures, Apple stock has shed nearly 12% this year, making it a weak link among the "Magnificent Seven" tech cohort. The company's legacy of sustainable excellence has also paved the way for cutting-edge technology like Apple Pay and the Apple Watch.

The rise in power demand for data centers — which are booming from the need to support a new world of AI technologies — is also fueling demand for the providers of data center parts. "Expected power usage for U.S. data centers under construction is equivalent to more than 50% of the power currently used by U.S. data centers. Several years out, even after these data centers are constructed, some expect data center power consumption to double again," analyst Thomas Thornton wrote in a Wednesday note. Management is raising its own capital expenditures for the first time in a decade to meet the power demand for data centers, BofA added. To be sure, analysts mentioned that data center demand will likely exceed supply.

But what if I told you this group shrunk its share count dramatically since 2019? The numbers tell the story: Lennar now has 276 million shares outstanding, down from 318 million five years ago. Other than Toll, most of the homebuilder management teams do not emphasize this fundamental change in share count. Management has been buying hand over fist since 2019, shrinking the share count to 215 million from 264 million. My rather unassailable conclusion is pretty simple: Check the share count before you buy a stock.

Caterpillar outperformed a lackluster industrial sector and kept pace with last year's strong market. While falling modestly in the next two sessions, Caterpillar rose 23.4% in 2023. Club name Caterpillar was last year's ninth-best performer of the 30 stocks that make up the Dow Jones Industrials Average , which gained 13.7% in 2023. The onslaught on federal spending was a prime reason the Club first initiated a position in Caterpillar back in January 2023. We're selling 25 shares of Caterpillar (CAT) at roughly $293. Following Wednesday's trade, Jim Cramer's Charitable Trust will own 290 shares of CAT, decreasing its weighting 2.82% from 3.05%. We're trimming some Caterpillar shares with the stock trading at a new all-time high. The stock made a strong move over the summer as those fears proved overblown and the company posted blowout earnings . However, raising a little extra cash when the market is this overbought is a discipline we are unwilling to break.

Texas-based Caterpillar, which makes heavy machinery emblazoned with its iconic yellow paint, said Nth's Cycle's technology can "help get valuable materials" back into circulation. "Caterpillar's collaboration with Nth Cycle supports our commitment to helping our customers achieve their climate-related objectives and establishing a circular value chain," said Rod Shurman, Caterpillar's senior vice president of electrification and energy solutions, in a statement released by Nth Cycle. REUTERS/Steve Marcus/ File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsOct 31 (Reuters) - Caterpillar (CAT.N) reported a double-digit rise in third-quarter profit on Tuesday, beating Wall Street estimates as strong infrastructure investments across key markets boosted demand for its high-end construction equipment in North America. The world's largest construction equipment maker's order backlog fell $2.6 billion quarter over quarter. Construction equipment demand had been resilient as the United States upgrades its roads, railways and other transportation infrastructure under a $1 trillion package approved by Congress in 2021 under the Biden administration. Machinery, Energy and Transportation equipment profit rose 48% from the year prior. Its profit rose to $2.79 billion, or $5.45 per share, outpacing an analysts' forecast of $4.79.

It's true the operating margin is expected to contract a bit from Tuesday's results. Latin America sales fell 31% due to lower sales volume that was only partially offset by higher prices. Higher prices also aided profitability, despite the dual headwinds of lower volumes and an unfavorable product mix. The adjusted operating profit margin for the fourth quarter is expected to be lower versus the third quarter result. All told, we believe the operating margin consensus on Wall Street needs an upward revision.

watch nowIn the meantime, copper customers, in anticipation of shortages, are either delaying clean energy projects or reducing their need for copper, an economic principle known as demand destruction. Among other actions, it would dismantle most of the clean energy projects initiated by the Biden Administration. At that point, the consensus was that there would be a major copper supply response. That's presented the industry with a whole new era of copper demand, Adkerson said. China's economy has slowed, while those in the U.S. and Europe are striving to transition to clean energy.

Eli Lilly not only reported a stellar second quarter, management was able to raise its full-year sales and adjusted earnings outlook as well. Though revenues were a tad short, earnings results were better than expected on a both a HAAP and adjusted basis. Constellation Brands' (STZ) sales and earnings results outpaced expectations. DuPont (DD) reported a good quarter prior to us initiating a position in the name.
